Frequently Asked Questions About Multiport Service Terminals (MST)

Q1: What is an MST terminal?

A: An MST (Multiport Service Terminal) is a factory-assembled and environmentally sealed fiber distribution terminal used in FTTH and outside plant networks. It provides multiple hardened connector ports for quickly connecting subscriber drop cables without field splicing.

A:

Rayoptic manufactures MST terminals in the following standard configurations:

2-port MST
4-port MST
6-port MST
8-port MST
12-port MST

Different housing arrangements, adapter orientations and mounting accessories can be customized according to project requirements.

A:

Yes. Rayoptic MST terminals are available with hardened adapters compatible with commonly used OptiTap-style drop cable connectors.

Connector and adapter compatibility should be confirmed before ordering, especially when the MST will be connected to components from an existing network.

A:  Depending on the installation environment, the MST can be supplied with different stub cable constructions, including:

  • Dielectric flat drop cable
  • Toneable flat drop cable
  • Round outdoor fiber cable
  • Armored fiber cable
  • Custom multi-fiber cable

Fiber type, fiber count, cable structure and jacket material can be selected according to the project requirements.

A: Rayoptic can supply MST terminals with G.657.A1, G.657.A2 or other specified single-mode fibers. YOFC fiber is available as the standard option, while Corning fiber can also be provided upon request.

A: MST stub cable lengths can be customized. Common lengths include short stubs for splicing and longer pre-terminated cable assemblies for direct network installation.

Length can be specified in meters or feet according to the project drawing or bill of materials.

A: The MST can be configured either as:

A connectorized distribution terminal without a splitter; or A terminal with a built-in PLC splitter.

For splitter configurations, customers should confirm the input connector, output port quantity, splitting ratio and fiber routing requirements.

A: Rayoptic MST terminals are designed and manufactured with reference to the relevant requirements of GR-771-CORE and GR-3120-CORE for outdoor fiber optic closures and hardened connectivity products.

Rayoptic can perform several related tests in-house. However, unless specifically stated for an individual product, this should not be interpreted as full third-party GR certification.

A: Yes. Every assembled MST terminal undergoes an air-tightness test to verify correct assembly and the integrity of its sealing structure.

Rayoptic’s standard internal test uses an air pressure of 40 kPa for 10 seconds, with an acceptable pressure drop of less than 0.1 kPa.

A: The MST sealing structure is designed to meet IP68 protection requirements. Every unit is checked by an air-tightness test during production, and water-immersion testing can also be performed.

The standard internal water-resistance test uses a water depth of 1.5 meters. Specific test conditions can be confirmed according to the customer’s project requirements.

A: Yes. Every port is individually tested for insertion loss and return loss before shipment to verify its optical performance.

Tests are normally performed at 1310 nm and 1550 nm. Additional wavelengths, such as 1490 nm or 1625 nm, can be tested when required.

A: For MST configurations without a built-in PLC splitter, Rayoptic’s standard acceptance requirement for the connectorized optical path is generally below 0.50 dB.

For MST configurations with a built-in PLC splitter, the total insertion-loss requirement depends on the splitter ratio and project specification.

Customized requirements, such as a maximum connectorized path loss of 0.40 dB, can be confirmed before production.

A: Depending on the product configuration and customer requirements, inspections may include:

Connector insertion loss and return loss
Connector end-face inspection
Port sequence verification
Fiber continuity testing
Air-tightness testing
Water-immersion testing
Cable length inspection
Cable-entry sealing inspection
Housing and accessory inspection
Label and packaging verification

A: Yes. Optical test results and pre-shipment inspection reports can be provided with the order.

Additional test documentation can be prepared when specific inspection items and acceptance criteria are confirmed before production.

A: Rayoptic can provide mounting accessories for different installation methods, including:

Pole mounting
Wall mounting
Aerial strand mounting
Pedestal or enclosure installation

Adjustable mounting brackets can also be developed or customized according to the installation drawing.

A: Rayoptic offers three primary packaging options:

Coiled packaging without a reel
Cardboard reel
Wooden reel

The most suitable option depends on the cable length, cable structure, installation method and shipping cost.

A: Cable assemblies from approximately 50 to 300 feet can normally be supplied in coils without a reel.

For lengths of 300 feet and above, a cardboard or wooden reel is generally recommended to improve installation efficiency and reduce cable twisting. The final packaging method remains flexible and can be selected according to the project requirements.

A: Yes. Rayoptic supports customized:

Product part numbers
Customer logos
Port identification
Cable markings
Product labels
Carton labels
Packing quantities
Reel labels
Packaging instructions

Customers can provide an editable label file or approve Rayoptic’s label drawing before production.

A: Rayoptic has manufactured and assembled MST terminals since 2020. Our current monthly production capacity is up to 10,000 units, depending on the port configuration, cable length and order requirements.

A: Rayoptic’s MST terminals and pre-terminated FTTH cable assemblies are primarily supplied to customers in the United States and Canada.

We also support customized projects for telecom operators, broadband network builders, distributors and fiber infrastructure contractors in other markets.

The Rayoptic Multiport Service Terminal (MST) is a rugged outdoor enclosure designed for rapid deployment in FTTH, FTTx, and harsh-environment access networks. Compatible with hardened plug-and-play connectors, our MST combines high-port density, environmental protection and simplified installation to reduce field labour and streamline network roll-out.
