FTTH (Fiber to the Home) fiber optic drop cable is a type of optical cable used to connect the last segment of the fiber optic network—typically from the distribution point or terminal—directly to the customer’s premises. It’s the “last mile” link in fiber-optic broadband, enabling high-speed internet, IPTV, and voice services.

Drop cables are designed for easy installation, compact design, and reliable performance in both indoor and outdoor environments. They are durable enough to handle bending, pulling, and environmental conditions while ensuring low signal loss.

FTTH drop cables come in various constructions to suit different applications. The most common types include:

  1. Flat Type Drop Cable

    • Structure: Two parallel FRP/KFRP strength members with a fiber in the center, usually in a flat, black LSZH or PVC jacket.

    • Use: Ideal for aerial or wall-mounted applications.

    • Feature: Lightweight, easy to handle and install.

  2. Figure-8 Self-Supporting Drop Cable

    • Structure: Flat drop cable with an additional steel or messenger wire for aerial suspension.

    • Use: Aerial installations without the need for additional support wire.

    • Feature: High tensile strength and durability.

  3. Round Drop Cable (Indoor/Outdoor Hybrid)

    • Structure: Round jacket with one or more fibers, surrounded by strength members and flame-retardant or UV-resistant sheath.

    • Use: Suitable for both indoor riser and outdoor conduit installations.

    • Feature: Flexible and versatile routing.

  4. Toneable Drop Cable

    • Structure: Flat or round cable integrated with a metallic tracer wire.

    • Use: Buried applications where cable locating is needed.

    • Feature: Detectable using tone generator for maintenance or repair.

  5. Pre-terminated Drop Cable

    • Structure: Any of the above, with factory-installed connectors (e.g., SC/APC).

    • Use: Plug-and-play installations.

    • Feature: Saves time, reduces installation errors.

How to Select the Right FTTH Drop Cable

Choosing the appropriate drop cable depends on several factors:

      1. Installation Environment

        • Aerial: Use figure-8 or flat drop cables.

        • Buried: Use toneable or armored drop cables.

        • Indoor: Use flame-retardant round cables.

      2. Cable Length and Bending Requirements

        • For tight spaces or corners, choose cables with a small bending radius and high flexibility.

      3. Connectorization Needs

        • For fast deployment, choose pre-terminated cables.

        • For custom field installations, use bare-ended drop cables.

      4. Fiber Count and Type

        • Most FTTH drops are single fiber (G.657A1/A2 bend-insensitive).

        • Higher fiber counts may be used in multi-dwelling units (MDUs).

      5. Standards and Certification

        • Ensure compliance with industry standards (ITU-T G.657, IEC, TIA/EIA).

        • Flame rating and UV resistance may be required depending on application.
